Draft Dodger

For many who live in older homes, winter means cold drafts that increase heating bills.  There are plenty of low-cost products available to temporarily seal up windows.  However, these products don’t work for doors that need to open and close.  I have tried several store-bought products that are supposed to block drafts underneath the door.  Sadly, none of them really work.  So I made my own! – at a fraction of the cost.

DIY Draft Dodger

                                   Gather Materials

1.  Large bowl, preferably one with a spout

2.  Wide-mouth funnel

3.  Dry rice (or beans).  Buy the cheapest available.

4.  Scissors

5.  Stockings.  Use an old pair with a hole or a run.

Cut one leg from the pair of stockings

Pour rice into bowl

Stretch the stocking

over the mouth of the funnel

                               Hold the funnel right-side-up

Be sure that your hand is wrapped around the stocking to secure it.

If you are having trouble with this, use a rubber band.

Pour the rice into the stocking

Tie a Knot at the Open End of the Stocking

To determine the correct length, lay the dodger in front of the door.

Cut the Excess Stocking

Place the Draft Dodger in Front of the Door!
