In a world where we are bombarded by advertising via tv, internet, print, etc., marketing experts know that word-of-mouth is still an effective way to promote their products. This is also true of penny pinchers. If you want to be in the know, find some frugal friends. I mean real, live, flesh-and-body friends – not the social media type. After all, how well can those 5,000 people really know you?
My mother and I rarely have a conversation that does not involve questions like, “Did you notice that such-and-such is on sale at so-and-so store this week? It is not unusual for this to be the reason for a phone call.
Since I gravitate toward the fervently frugal, my closest friends are regularly bringing to my attention all kinds of penny-pinching opportunities. For example, two of my dearest friends ( a mother-daughter duo) informed me of a killer clearance sale a couple of weeks ago. Because they are real friends, I know that their idea of “killer clearance” matches mine exactly. So without hesitation, off I went the very next day. Less than an hour later, I walked out of the store with 14 tops and 2 pairs of shoes for a total of $21 (tax included)!!
These same two friends helped me to locate the “reduced” section at the grocery store. The store had recently been remodeled and the section at the front of the store was eliminated. For weeks, I looked for a new location in vain. One day, in normal conversation, I lamented the loss of this section to my friends. A few weeks later, they triumphantly shared their discovery of the new location.
Don’t limit your circle to people who are your age and gender. I have a dear little friend who is an 11-year old boy. Just last week he was telling me about a lizard that he bought at a pet store. He was very proud of the fact that he used a gift card and a coupon to get his lizard. Penny pinchers come in all shapes and sizes!
If you haven’t done so already, start seeking out some frugal friends. If you already have some, widen your circle. Your wallet will thank you.
