Bulk It Up

Spread on the Savings

Normally, when we think of bulk buying we think of nonperishable foods.  But why limit the savings?!  Most of us use some sort of margarine or vegetable spread on a daily basis.  If you are interested in purchasing one of these products that lean toward the healthier side, you will have to pay a little extra.  Or will you?  If you wait until they are on sale (and throw in any coupons that you may have) you can save close to 50% off the regular price.  Sadly, the expiration date will arrive on most of them before you get a chance to consume them.  Fret not!  These spreads freeze nicely and will keep in the freezer for up to a year.  Take advantage of those sales and stock up.

Eat Your Vegetables!

It has long been debated, and will continue to be, whether fresh or frozen vegetables are more nutritious.  During the winter months the discussion is pretty much pointless for those of us who have a limited grocery budget.  Any fresh vegetables that are available require that we take out a second mortgage or surrender the kids’ college fund in order to afford them.  Therefore, in our household we opt for the frozen variety and always keep a nice stock in our home freezer.

My primary source for frozen veggies is my favorite grocery stop, Aldi.  As is typical for Aldi, I can buy a 16 oz bag for less money than I can buy a 12 oz bag on sale at other grocery stores.  The slight downside to Aldi is the limited selection.  So when my Kroger puts their store-brand frozen vegetables on sale 10 for $10, I stock up on varieties not available at Aldi, including a variety of mixed vegetables.

Having frozen vegetables on hand allows you to prepare a home-cooked meal quickly and inexpensively.  They can very quickly become a tasty pot of soup, a delicious pasta dish or the ever-faithful side dish.  So stock up and get cookin’!
