Every Last Crumb

Since I have purchased the Bread Buddy I have been throwing out less bread than I ever did.  Nonetheless, there are times that the last few slices just aren’t fresh enough to be appetizing.  And there are only a few weirdos out there that actually enjoy the crust ends of the loaf.  I am blessed to have a husband who enjoys making homemade bread, which he does a couple of times a week.  The point of all these little facts?  It seems inevitable that there is dry bread around the kitchen.  Rather than just throw it away or pitch it out in the backyard for the birds, why not put it to good use?  A quick whirl in the food processor and oila! you’ve got homemade bread crumbs.

Homemade Breadcrumbs

I googled “make homemade bread crumbs” and literally got well over 2 million hits – most of which say that you need to dry the bread in a low oven.  Personally, I let the bread air dry.  Contrary to some of the warnings that you may come across, I have never noticed a “stale” taste with bread crumbs dried this way.  If you don’t have a food processor, place the dry bread in a zipper bag and crush using a rolling pin or the bottom of a skillet.  If you prefer seasoned bread crumbs, add dried spices.  Store the crumbs in an airtight container and use as a binder, to coat meat and vegetables or to top casseroles and savor every last crumb!
